One of the baffling yet important things for me as a runner, triathlete or just someone concerned about my health and fitness, is the topic of heart rate. It’s sort of been an area of focus with me over this past year as I trained and competed in my first triathlons.
There’s all this talk about “target heart rate zones” and which zone is best for maximum fat loss, cardio endurance, etc. It can all be a little confusing; and honestly still is a little to me. I asked my trainer recently about all the target heart rate zone hype and she mentioned to use the Karvonen method for calculating target zones depending on fitness goals. As my triathlon season came to an end this year, I want to concentrate more on fat loss and less on endurance during my cardio workouts over the winter. As opposed to the different zones I used during triathlon training. So I’m going to start using more interval workouts on cardio days.
When thinking about fat loss and heart rate zones, consider this; do you burn more gas in town when you’re stopping and starting at every stop light or when maintaining a constant speed on the highway?
Of course we all know the answer to that right? So it completely makes sense that by using interval training (bursts of faster pace, higher heart rate, following by recovery, then repeated) I’ll burn fat quicker than if I’m running long distances at a medium pace. Before determining your target zones, you need to figure out your resting heart rate. For me, I just wake up in the morning, turn on my Garmin 305 with heart rate monitor and lay there or fall back to sleep for a few minutes. It then gives me my average heart rate.
